    Section 8 Rental assistance - How do I apply for Section 8 rental assistance online?

    In order to apply for the section 8 rental assistance program, one must find a housing authority that is accepting applications. There is no trick when you are trying to apply for Section 8 online. HUD allocates funding for PHA's to run the program locally. Rental assistance programs like Section 8 are federraly funded and consequently require United States citizenship to apply. Severe housing affordability problems have worsened across the country since before the Great Recession, our revised state fact sheets on federal rental assistance show. Between 2007 and 2013, the number of low-income renters paying more than half of their income for housing rose in every state but Delaware. Moreover, the share of low-income renters with such severe rent burdens and demands for those wanting to apply for section 8 online or at the actual housig authority rose in 45 states and the District of Columbia (see maps). As these maps show, housing became increasingly unaffordable for low-income rental assistance renters across much of the South, Midwest, and Mid-Atlantic. But Maine experienced the biggest jump: nearly 40 percent of low-income Maine renters paid over half their income for rent and utilities in 2013, compared to less than 30 percent in 2007. The share of eligible low income housing application applicants and rental assistance households with severe rent burdens fell in five states — Arkansas, California, Delaware, Hawaii, and Nevada — due to a surge in renters resulting from the home mortgage foreclosure crisis. But this doesn’t mean that affordability problems have improved there. The number of low-income renters with severe rents still rose or stayed roughly the same in these five states between 2007 and 2013. Rather, the share fell because the number of low-income renters grew faster than the number paying more than half of their income for housing. In every state, at least one in four low-income renters paid more than half of their income for housing in 2013. Over 10 million low-income renter households had such severe rent burdens in 2013. A open section 8 waiting list is rarely open. Unfortunately, less than a quarter of low-income families eligible for federal rental assistance receive it due to funding limitations, and few states provide additional help or are able to provide a section 8 housing application. Sequestration cuts enacted under the 2011 Budget Control Act have shrunk limited federal resources even further.     More than a quarter of the 14,500 families living in homeless shelters have at least one person working full-time — and yet they still cannot afford the high cost of an apartment in New York City. The Rental Assistance Program (RAP), established in 1987, provides rental subsidies — as well as budgeting and counseling support — to homeless individuals and families for up to two years so that they can transition into and independently maintain permanent affordable housing after completing a section 8 application. RAP clients pay a carefully budgeted amount of their monthly income toward rent, with the Coalition providing monthly rental subsidies of either $300 for single adults or $450 for families. Our case managers help clients find decent, livable apartments that they will be able to afford on their own once they graduate from the program. During their two-year participation in RAP, clients meet monthly with our case managers to develop and implement strategies to increase their job skills, earning potential and ability to independently carry their rent payments after graduating from the program.

    A Section 8 Housing Application is for applicants to apply for section 8 online in most cases, when waiting lists are open for the Housing Choice Voucher program which is a government subsidized housing assistance program for a low income family or individual.     Congress established the Section 8 Rental Assistance Program in 1974. Although not an entitlement, the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program is the federal government’s principal housing assistance program. The program assists low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled to rent affordable, safe and sanitary housing. Initially, applicants pay up to 40 percent of their adjusted monthly income toward rent and utilities. The Housing Authority pays the balance of the rent, up to a regulated maximum amount. Program participants find their own rental housing. The dwelling may be a single-family house, townhouse, condominium, apartment, duplex, triplex, complex, and so on.
